What Is Apexogenesis?
Apexogenesis is a dental procedure aimed at preserving the vitality of the dental pulp and encouraging the continued development of the root in a child's tooth with an open apex, often caused by trauma or decay. At Austin Center for Endodontics, Dr. Ketan Amin and Dr. Arif Karim specialize in endodontic treatments such as this procedure, which involves cleaning the affected area, placing a biocompatible material to protect the pulp, and promoting natural root growth. This treatment is particularly beneficial for younger patients with developing teeth, as it helps ensure the tooth remains functional and strong over time while preventing further complications. How Is Apexogenesis Performed?
The apexogenesis procedure is typically performed in a few stages to ensure the tooth's root continues to develop properly. First, Dr. Amin or Dr. Karim will clean and disinfect the root canal to remove any infection or damaged tissue. After thoroughly cleaning the area, a biocompatible material, such as calcium hydroxide, is placed inside the canal to stimulate the formation of healthy tissue and encourage root development. The goal is to allow the tooth’s root to continue forming while maintaining the vitality of the dental pulp. Follow-up visits may be required to monitor progress, and once the root is sufficiently developed, the tooth is sealed and restored with a crown or filling for protection and function.
What Are the Benefits of Apexogenesis?
Apexogenesis offers several significant benefits for preserving the health and function of a tooth with an open apex. Benefits of this treatment include:
- Preserves the vitality of the dental pulp
- Promotes continued root development
- Avoids the need for more invasive procedures, like root canal therapy
- Helps maintain the tooth's natural structure
- Ensures the tooth remains functional for chewing and speaking
Austin Center for Endodontics Reviews
Fantastic experience. The communication with the office before my consultation and procedure was stellar. Upon my initial call, I was easily taken care of and scheduled by Patrick. My forms and any additional information was sent to me ahead of time. Check in was a breeze and the office was cozy and calm. Dr. Amin quickly assessed the problem area and explained the necessary root canal and the steps it would involve in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Amin and his assistant were professional, courteous, and very efficient. My consultation and treatment were complete in under an hour which I really appreciated as I was nervous for my first ever root canal. I really appreciate the care that is evident at this office and would definitely go back if ever needed. Thank y'all so much for your help!
Lovely doctor and staff who provide kind and compassionate care. Highly recommend!
Ketan Amin, DMD is the ONLY Endo I want to have work on my teeth! He is gentle, kind and thorough in explanation. His staff is also very kind and informative and sensitive to the pain that goes with needing a root canal. He and his assistant do everything to keep you as comfortable as possible during the procedure, and quick to answer any questions before and after. I was so relieved to be able to hold an appointment for a few days after I sensed a problem, awaiting a DDS to confirm. Dr. Amin has worked on 2 other teeth for root canals and I'm so grateful he was there for me again. Kudos to Austin Center for Endodontics.
Dr. Amin and staff were wonderful. I emailed them on the weekend and they called me on Monday morning with an appointment available immediately. I was so happy to have Dr. Amin help me with this tooth as he helped with 2 other teeth in 2015 and 2017. He is so gentle and a great dentist.
Went to my regular dentist for a semi annual appt and found one of my front teeth had gone dead and changed colors. They recommended Dr Amin. Called same day and got an appt for the next day to see Dr. Amin for consultation and treatment. Great customer service by his crew and great treatment by Dr. Amin. He came in and explained what probably happened to the tooth. Showed me again that it had no feeling to it and the root was dead. We went ahead with a root canal and we were all done in about 40 minutes! They were great!
