What Is an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is a dental procedure performed to address issues at the tip of the tooth’s root, particularly when a root canal treatment has not successfully resolved an infection or if complications persist. This surgical procedure is typically recommended when there is an ongoing infection or inflammation around the root that cannot be treated through a conventional root canal. Our endodontic specialists, Dr. Ketan Amin and Dr. Arif Karim, perform this procedure to remove the infected tissue and seal the root tip, helping to preserve the natural tooth and avoid extraction. At Austin Center for Endodontics, we may recommend an apicoectomy to save teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted due to persistent infection or damage. For more information, contact our Austin, TX office to schedule a consultation.
How Is an Apicoectomy Performed?
An apicoectomy is performed by first making a small incision in the gum tissue near the affected tooth to access the root tip. Once the area is exposed, Dr. Amin or Dr. Karim will carefully remove any infected tissue at the root tip and clean the area to eliminate bacteria. The end of the root is then sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent further infection. After the procedure, the gum tissue is sutured back into place, and the healing process begins, with follow-up visits to ensure proper recovery and the long-term health of the tooth.
What Are the Benefits of an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy offers several important benefits for preserving a natural tooth and ensuring long-term dental health. Some of these benefits include:
- Saves the tooth by addressing persistent infection
- Prevents the need for extraction, maintaining natural function
- Eliminates infection at the root tip to promote healing
- Provides an effective solution when a root canal fails
- Helps restore the tooth's strength and functionality
Austin Center for Endodontics Reviews
Fantastic experience. The communication with the office before my consultation and procedure was stellar. Upon my initial call, I was easily taken care of and scheduled by Patrick. My forms and any additional information was sent to me ahead of time. Check in was a breeze and the office was cozy and calm. Dr. Amin quickly assessed the problem area and explained the necessary root canal and the steps it would involve in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Amin and his assistant were professional, courteous, and very efficient. My consultation and treatment were complete in under an hour which I really appreciated as I was nervous for my first ever root canal. I really appreciate the care that is evident at this office and would definitely go back if ever needed. Thank y'all so much for your help!
Lovely doctor and staff who provide kind and compassionate care. Highly recommend!
Ketan Amin, DMD is the ONLY Endo I want to have work on my teeth! He is gentle, kind and thorough in explanation. His staff is also very kind and informative and sensitive to the pain that goes with needing a root canal. He and his assistant do everything to keep you as comfortable as possible during the procedure, and quick to answer any questions before and after. I was so relieved to be able to hold an appointment for a few days after I sensed a problem, awaiting a DDS to confirm. Dr. Amin has worked on 2 other teeth for root canals and I'm so grateful he was there for me again. Kudos to Austin Center for Endodontics.
Dr. Amin and staff were wonderful. I emailed them on the weekend and they called me on Monday morning with an appointment available immediately. I was so happy to have Dr. Amin help me with this tooth as he helped with 2 other teeth in 2015 and 2017. He is so gentle and a great dentist.
Went to my regular dentist for a semi annual appt and found one of my front teeth had gone dead and changed colors. They recommended Dr Amin. Called same day and got an appt for the next day to see Dr. Amin for consultation and treatment. Great customer service by his crew and great treatment by Dr. Amin. He came in and explained what probably happened to the tooth. Showed me again that it had no feeling to it and the root was dead. We went ahead with a root canal and we were all done in about 40 minutes! They were great!
